The Office of the Press Secretary

The Office of the Press Secretary plays an important, central role in distributing information from the White House to the American public. The press secretary serves as the spokesperson for the president and the White House. It is his or her job to provide updates on the president’s schedule and agenda, policy priorities and initiatives, and official responses and statements to journalists assigned to cover the White House.

The press secretary serves three constituencies:

The President

The President wants the press secretary to make them look good.

The White House Staff

The White House staff wants the press secretary to keep the media out of their hair so they can focus on their jobs

News organizations

News organizations want the press secretary to give them information they need

In some cases, all of these priorities align but in other instances, they conflict. It is the job of the press secretary to navigate and manage the interests from these different constituencies.
